For many people, the flexibility of working from the comfort of their home is a dream come true. However, there are some significant challenges to overcome.

During the coronavirus pandemic, working from home became the new reality for many workers. Even tech giants like Google, Twitter, Facebook, and Amazon, announced that most of their employees would be working remotely.

Below are some tips for working from home effectively.

1. Organize your Working Area

When working from home, you should make a few changes to shift into work mode. If you don’t have a designated office space in your home, you can set up your office in the living room. You have options for setup ideas—even the dining table can be a temporary office every day.

The best way to boost your office ergonomics is to find a comfortable chair to sit on. Also, consider an ergonomic mouse and keyboard. Make sure you have everything you need: laptop, phone, day planner, printer, monitor setup, etc. And don’t forget bright sticky notes! Being organized will help you get the job done efficiently.

2. Avoid Distractions

It’s easy to get distracted when everyone is at home. The reality is that some distractions will be an ever-present part of your working life at home. Do your best to avoid getting knocked off course. Another distraction that can kill your productivity is social media. Consider switching off your Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram notifications.

3. Take Frequent Breaks

When you’re working out of your home, it’s crucial that you take breaks often. Go for a short jog, grab a cup of coffee, or walk around the neighborhood. This will have a positive impact on your productivity. One idea is to set your alarm for coffee, meals, and minor chores.

4. Take Time to Be Active

For many at-home workers, it’s challenging to fit in physical activity. There’re plenty of apps that offer remote classes to ensure your body remains in tip-top shape. Did you know working out can improve your mood and energy? If you can squeeze a workout in before you start work, you’ll find that you are more productive during the day. Or, try splitting up workouts into smaller ones throughout the day.

Even a simple 10-minutes exercise can make a big difference. Breathing exercises are also great to practice when you’re feeling stressed at work.

5. Communicate with Your Team

If you want to enjoy working from home, you must prioritize communication. It’s more important than ever when you’re working remotely. You can have a video call with your manager to ensure nothing gets lost in the distance; it will give you adequate face time with your team. Or, a conference call is an excellent way to keep in touch and ensure everyone is on the same page.

When it comes to remote working, home office design, and organization matter, the idea is to create an area conducive for work that is enjoyable and as distraction-free as possible. You may have to get creative with your office setup, but it’s entirely doable.
